FAMILY SESSION GUIDE

WELCOME

Yay - you’re here! 🎉 Whether it’s been a while since your last session or this is your first time, I’m so excited to capture the love, laughter, and beautiful chaos that makes your family yours. Family life moves fast - so the fact that you’re hitting pause for a moment to document this season? That’s a big deal. These photos won’t just be for you right now... they’ll be treasures for years to come.

This guide is here to help you feel totally prepared for your upcoming family session - what to expect, how to prep, and all my best tips to keep it easy, fun, and full of real connection.

WHAT MAKES FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIAL

Family photography is all about capturing the real stuff: the love, the giggles, the wild energy, and the tiny moments in between that you’ll look back on with full hearts. Here’s what we focus on during your session:

  • Big belly laughs and quiet cuddles
  • The way your little ones hold your hand or climb into your lap
  • Those blink-and-you-miss-it in-between moments

MY APPROACH

Think of this session like a hangout with your favorite people. My sessions are relaxed, playful, and built around movement, not perfection. We’ll play games, chase light, and embrace whatever the kids throw our way (sometimes literally). I follow your family’s vibe, not a rigid shot list, which means more natural moments and way less pressure.

There’s no need to worry about kids “behaving” or smiling perfectly - I’m here for the giggles, the cuddles, the chaos, and all the real moments in between.

As you get ready for your session, remember: you don’t need to be perfect - you just need to be you. I’ll guide you every step of the way so it’s easy, fun, and totally do-able (even if you’ve got a wild toddler in tow).

I can’t wait to meet your crew and create something beautiful together!

PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION

To help you feel confident and ready for your upcoming family photo session, here are some tips that will make everything go smoothly and feel easy.

ENERGY + ATTITUDE

  • Make sure everyone eats beforehand and stays hydrated. A well-fed family is a happy one.
  • Pack a few non-messy snacks, especially for the kids.
  • Keep the vibe light and easy. Don’t stress about perfect behavior. The best photos come from real moments, not forced ones.

RELAX + ENJOY

  • Don’t worry if your kids aren’t acting "perfect." I promise, the real moments are what matter most.
  • Focus on being present with your family.
  • I’ll give you gentle direction throughout the session, so you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
  • Come ready to play, connect, and be yourselves.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Water and easy snacks
  • Wipes or tissues for quick cleanups
  • A favorite toy or comfort item for your child

GETTING KIDS READY

  • Let them know we’re just going to play and have fun. No stiff posing or pressure to "smile perfectly."
  • Dress them in clothes they like and feel good in.
  • Bring a small activity like a toy or book if they need a quick break.
  • You don’t need to offer big bribes or rewards. I have plenty of tricks to keep things fun and low-pressure.

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Choose 2 or 3 coordinating colors that look great together. Think soft tones, warm neutrals, or one pop of color.
  • Avoid big logos, neon colors, or super busy patterns. These can be distracting in your photos.
  • Wear clothing that feels comfortable and allows for movement. We’ll be playing, sitting, snuggling, and having fun.
  • Mix in different textures like denim, knits, or linen to add depth to your look.

FINAL TIPS

  • Wear what makes you feel good and confident, comfort always photographs best.
  • Remove anything from your pockets and take off smartwatches if you don’t want them to show in photos.
  • The best thing you can do is show up as you are and love on your people. That’s where the magic happens.

IDEAL TIMING

The best time for family photos? Whenever your crew is ready! That said, sessions usually run most smoothly when:

  • Everyone is fed and rested
  • We plan around your family’s natural rhythm (especially with little ones)
  • We shoot during golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) for soft, magical light

Don’t stress if things aren’t perfect—I’ve worked with early risers, snack break lovers, and full-energy explorers. We’ll make it work beautifully.

SESSION DURATION

Family sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes. That gives us time to:

  • Warm up and get everyone comfortable
  • Explore, play, and laugh together
  • Capture a mix of candid moments and lightly guided shots
  • Take breaks if needed for snacks, wiggles, or a little reset

We move at your family’s pace, so there’s no pressure to rush or perform.
